Why Choose A Moving Company

People uploading moving boxes to a truck

So why opt for a moving company over a DIY alternative? For starters, hiring a moving company saves you from having to do any of the heavy lifting on moving day. This, in and of itself, is the most common reason why people choose to hire professional movers. Moving company pros know how to properly load and unload moving trucks, as well as how to move furniture without scratching the floors. Choosing a reputable and reliable moving company to handle your relocation only ensures that your move will be carried out in the most efficient way possible. It also frees up valuable time and energy that you can spend on other important to-do list items on your moving checklist.

Factors that Affect Moving Company Quotes

A person carrying a moving boxes

1. PACKING AND CRATING COSTS:

Remember, you’re paying your moving company for their time. Obviously, they’ll need more time if you ask them to pack your belongings. You can save money by packing some or all of your belongings yourself. You can cut costs further by disassembling large pieces of furniture rather than having the mover do it for you. Finally, you’ll pay more for specific kinds of packing and handling. For example, if items like artwork or a grandfather clock require crating, your cost will be higher.

2.POOR ACCESS TO YOUR PICK-UP OR DROP-OFF LOCATION:

If your current or future residence is in a location which prevents access for a large truck (for example, because of a narrow road or a weak bridge), your movers will need to find another way to get belongings out of your old home or into your new one. For example, they might need to use smaller vehicles to gain access. In this case, you’ll need to pay the mover a shuttle fee.

3. STAIRS OR LONG WALKING DISTANCES:

The cost of your move will also be higher if there are very long stairs (or multiple stairs) which they need to carry your belongings up or down. You might also have to pay a long-carry fee if the distance from the moving truck to the entrance of your residence is greater than 50 feet.

4. NARROW DOORS OR HALLWAYS:

If some of your items don’t fit through the door or down narrow hallways, a rigger might be needed to hoist them inside through a window. In this case, you could be assessed a hoisting fee.

5. STORAGE FEES:

This is one of the most common reasons for increased costs. If you need to store some or all of your belongings at the carrier’s warehouse because your new home is not ready to be occupied, you’ll need to pay an additional storage fee.

6. TIME OF YEAR:

Summer is the busiest moving time of the year, which means that moving in the summer will cost more. You can save money if it’s possible to time your move from September to May. You’ll also pay more if you move on a national holiday or on the first or last day of the month (this is because rental agreements typically expire at these times, which means more people move then).

Double quotes

Some moving companies quote lowball prices and then, once the move is underway, hold their customers' property hostage until they pay much more. Others demand substantial deposits and then don't show up

Good Day,
When I select my home town and the list of moving companies with reviews come up, how do I know which ones are interstate movers?

user avatar

Ashley Richmond

4 years, 9 months ago

Hi Braam,

Great question! If you go to the top bar where it says "Moving Estimate" and click through to this page, you can easily fill out an estimate that can be distributed to movers within your area that have the correct licensing to move interstate and that are in good standing with Moving Authority. You will want to follow through and use the Moving Calculator where you input the inventory of your household goods. This will help expedite the process and will direct the correct list of the items that are being moved to each mover. This will allow you to compare apples to apples and choose the mover that best fits your needs.

user avatar

Hi Elsie I not quite sure I understand your question. This page is to find moving companies in the Unites States. If you want to locate a local mover near you, you just click above on the state you think that the moving company is in and then you will see the top 20 movers on the first page. The Movers are listed though continuous pages there after. You can also search a Mover via name with the "Find Mover" tab at the top of the page. This search is done with either the name or the license number that the local mover holds. When you find local movers that your looking for you can write a review. Have a great day Elsie

Does all moving companies have to have a USDOT number or PUC number? What is the difference?

user avatar

Adam P

4 years, 8 months ago

All moving companies that travel over State lines must hold a USDOT active number. This ensures that the house hold goods carrier has active insurance and licensing to perform your move. A PUC number is normally for local moving companies within the State that they are in. Most States follow the guidelines of the DOT but different requirements exist depending in what State carrier is operating out of. We would advise you to only book with a licensed mover. Most people look for moving companies near me or the area close to where you live so Moving Authority posts PUC & USDOT information for the benefit of our user.

Good Day,

If moving to a different state, would it not be easier to find a company in the state I am moving to, or is there a way to look for a company that has offices in both the state I am moving from to where I am moving too?

user avatar

Adam Peterson

4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Cathy. Moving companies send trucks out on jobs all the time and travel is part of the territory. Actually the moving company you choose should be in the state/city that you are currently living in. They will send their truck to you locally and then take all your items to your new location. If you decided you want an on site estimate for your home you need to choose a company that is located where you currently are (not where you are moving) Hope this helps! Click on our "moving companies" link at the top of this page to search by state for a mover near you.

Good Day,
We don't have a moving company in our home town. If we ask for a home estimate, will they charge us to come to the house and give us a quote?

user avatar

Ashley Richmond

3 years, 10 months ago

Hey Joan, we recommend that you find a mover that is closest to your home town and have them do an estimate. You can ask if they will charge you. Only have those that agree to not charge you come by and do an estimate for you. This would be the best way to make sure you are not charged for an estimate.

Depends how far you are off the grid. You could use our Moving Calculator or you could ask the moving company to use Skype. If you have a smart phone then you can walk around your home and show the estimator what you are moving. This is a great way to do it. The real thing you need to provide movers is the inventory so they can do the numbers for your move. Try choose a mover that travel your route. Best of luck and fill in the moving calculator now.

Hi, if I'm planning to move to Canada, am I able to use a mover in the states to move or should I look for a mover in Canada? At the moment I am living in Southern California but I was wondering if moving companies in the states have partnerships with moving companies in our neighboring country. We still have lots of time to plan our move but we just wanted to think ahead before its too late for us to plan it out. We were planning to contact the moving companies that we were interested in and ask if they can move us across the border but we wanted to see if there was an easier way to find the companies that are able to do so. We know that it will cost a bit more to be able to move to another country but we just wanted to know which companies will provide the most competitive pricing for the job. We don't mind paying extra money but we also want to make sure the company doing the job is experienced in this type of move and is able to complete the job properly. If there is any way you can help us, we would appreciate it a lot. If you are able to, thanks in advance for your help. Thanks for the website as well as it allows us to sort through moving companies more easily.

user avatar

Ashley Richmond

3 years, 10 months ago

Hi Marie! We recommend that you find a mover here and explain to them your moving situation. If they are not able to accommodate your move to Canada, keep searching for a company near your area that will. Some companies have or are able to make connections to moving companies in Canada. What will likely happen is the company will bring your items to the border and the Canadian company will pick it up and bring it to your new place. Just be sure the moving company you start with is the right one for the job. You can do this by reading their reviews on our website.

Hi Fanco! We're glad you find our site informative. I think the best way to get a moving company that will properly take care of your things is to read reviews of moving companies that you are interested in. If the moving companies in your city have bad reviews, look for moving companies in cities nearby and find ones that have great reviews. This is probably the best way to find the best moving company for your needs.

This is interesting! I’d never thought it could be this easy for me to find movers near me. That means the movers are just a few clicks away. I’m having an issue here, please. Someone recommended a company which is near me. I have started arrangements with them but felt like visiting this page just for more information. I just discovered the company is poorly rated by four reviewers. I’m calling off my contract with them coz I wouldn’t want anything less. My concern now is if it’s the best choice for me coz they have not responded in a way that looks unprofessional yet.

user avatar

I think the reviews on our website is the best way to avoid any moving nightmares later on during your move. If the company already has bad reviews from four previous customers, we highly recommend that you reconsider your move with them. It's always better to go with a mover with better reviews even though it may cost more because the quality of service that you will be getting will save you money due to your items being in good hands.

I'm just not sure what the difference between any of them is. Looking at reviews on MA.....

user avatar

Ashley Richmond

3 years, 10 months ago

The best way to compare prices between moving companies is to look at the web pages of each company you're interested in. If they do not have web pages, it would be best to give them a call and ask. Moving companies generally do not like to put up information on their prices online due to other companies trying to beat them at their pricing.

user avatar

Our advice is to just look for a mover in or near your area and read the reviews for that mover. The reviews generally tell you the experience you will be expected to get with that mover so if a mover has bad reviews, it's generally a good idea to look for another mover to help you on your move.

Do you think movers located in the northern states will be more likely be able to move residents to Canada? I'm looking for a moving company who can accommodate us but I want an American moving company to help move our belongings. We tried looking for Canadian movers online but it was sort of difficult so we decided to try looking for American movers on your site. Our plan is to contact moving companies located in the north and ask if they move customers across the border.

Hi Sarah,

If you are looking to move to Canada, considering moving companies in northern states will definitely be a good thing to do as these movers will be more likely able to move you across the border since many of their customers may ask for the same service. I would go to the state pages of the states closest to your home or where your home is located. Just compare the best movers in your area and decide from there what company works best for you.

I had to hire another company to off-load from their truck to another moving companie's truck. This company was hired on an emergency basis, one I would never have hired, and later had to hire another company to finish the job.

Even though Graebel never delivered my possessions, THEY NEVERTHELESS DEMAND TO BE PAIID IN FULL. !! Their corporate office in Texas is still operational and they may resart again !!!!

Did You Know

Question Receiving nation attention during the 1960's and 70's, songs and movies about truck driving were major hits. Finding solidarity, truck drivers participated in widespread strikes. Truck drivers from all over opposed the rising cost of fuel. Not to mention this is during the energy crises of 1873 and 1979. In 1980 the Motor Carrier Act drastically deregulated the trucking industry. Since then trucking has come to dominate the freight industry in the latter part of the 20th century. This coincided with what are now known as 'big-box' stores such as Target or Wal-Mart.

Question A commercial driver's license (CDL) is a driver's license required to operate large or heavy vehicles.

Question The decade of the 70s saw the heyday of truck driving, and the dramatic rise in the popularity of "trucker culture". Truck drivers were romanticized as modern-day cowboys and outlaws (and this stereotype persists even today). This was due in part to their use of citizens' band (CB) radio to relay information to each other regarding the locations of police officers and transportation authorities. Plaid shirts, trucker hats, CB radios, and using CB slang were popular not just with drivers but among the general public.

Question “Country music scholar Bill Malone has gone so far as to say that trucking songs account for the largest component of work songs in the country music catalog. For a style of music that has, since its commercial inception in the 1920s, drawn attention to the coal man, the steel drivin’ man, the railroad worker, and the cowboy, this certainly speaks volumes about the cultural attraction of the trucker in the American popular consciousness.” — Shane Hamilton

Question Trucks of the era mostly used two-cylinder engines and had a carrying capacity of 1,500 to 2,000 kilograms (3,300 to 4,400 lb). In 1904, 700 heavy trucks were built in the United States, 1000 in 1907, 6000 in 1910, and 25000 in 1914. A Benz truck modified by Netphener company (1895)

Question The United States' Interstate Highway System is full of bypasses and loops with the designation of a three-digit number. Usually beginning with an even digit, it is important to note that this pattern is highly inconsistent. For example, in Des Moines, Iowa the genuine bypass is the main route. More specifically, it is Interstate 35 and Interstate 80, with the loop into downtown Des Moines being Interstate 235. As it is illustrated in this example, they do not always consistently begin with an even number. However, the 'correct' designation is exemplified in Omaha, Nebraska. In Omaha, Interstate 480 traverses the downtown area, which is bypassed by Interstate 80, Interstate 680, and Interstate 95. Interstate 95 then in turn goes through Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Furthermore, Interstate 295 is the bypass around Philadelphia, which leads into New Jersey. Although this can all be rather confusing, it is most important to understand the Interstate Highway System and the role bypasses play.

Question

In the United States, commercial truck classification is fixed by each vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). There are 8 commercial truck classes, ranging between 1 and 8. Trucks are also classified in a more broad way by the DOT's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The FHWA groups them together, determining classes 1-3 as light duty, 4-6 as medium duty, and 7-8 as heavy duty. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has its own separate system of emission classifications for commercial trucks. Similarly, the United States Census Bureau had assigned classifications of its own in its now-discontinued Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (TIUS, formerly known as the Truck Inventory and Use Survey).

Question DOT officers of each state are generally in charge of the enforcement of the Hours of Service (HOS). These are sometimes checked when CMVs pass through weigh stations. Drivers found to be in violation of the HOS can be forced to stop driving for a certain period of time. This, in turn, may negatively affect the motor carrier's safety rating. Requests to change the HOS are a source of debate. Unfortunately, many surveys indicate drivers routinely get away with violating the HOS. Such facts have started yet another debate on whether motor carriers should be required to us EOBRs in their vehicles. Relying on paper-based log books does not always seem to enforce the HOS law put in place for the safety of everyone.

Question A properly fitted close-coupled trailer is fitted with a rigid tow bar. It then projects from its front and hooks onto a hook on the tractor. It is important to not that it does not pivot as a draw bar does.

Question Advocation for better transportation began historically in the late 1870s of the United States. This is when the Good Roads Movement first occurred, lasting all the way throughout the 1920s. Question The term "lorry" has an ambiguous origin, but it is likely that its roots were in the rail transport industry. This is where the word is known to have been used in 1838 to refer to a type of truck (a freight car as in British usage) specifically a large flat wagon. It may derive from the verb lurry, which means to pull or tug, of uncertain origin. It's expanded meaning was much more exciting as "self-propelled vehicle for carrying goods", and has been in usage since 1911. Previously, unbeknownst to most, the word "lorry" was used for a fashion of big horse-drawn goods wagon.

Question In 1893, the Office of Road Inquiry (ORI) was established as an organization. However, in 1905 the name was changed to the Office Public Records (OPR). The organization then went on to become a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. As seen throughout history, organizations seem incapable of maintaining permanent names. So, the organization's name was changed three more times, first in 1915 to the Bureau of Public Roads and again in 1939 to the Public Roads Administration (PRA). Yet again, the name was later shifted to the Federal Works Agency, although it was abolished in 1949. Finally, in 1949, the name reverted to the Bureau of Public Roads, falling under the Department of Commerce. With so many name changes, it can be difficult to keep up to date with such organizations. This is why it is most important to research and educate yourself on such matters.

Though they essentially serve the same purpose as business routes, they are different. They feature "CITY" signs as opposed to "BUSINESS" signs above or below route shields.
