Incorporated as a city in 1846, Milwaukee has been part of the history of the U.S. for over 170 years. Much of the population are descendants of German immigrants as that was the main population of immigrants coming to Milwaukee during the 1800s. During the 19th century, the economy relied mostly on crop production such as wheat which was shipped from the city by railroads going to other cities in America. Being close to Lake Michigan, the water source made it easy for businesses such as shipping, stockyards and manufacturing plants to flourish. Another economic product that was produced quite frequently in Milwaukee was beer and other alcoholic beverages. This was due to the dominant German population that grew after the migration of German immigrants mentioned earlier. Along with the growth of wheat was the growth of barley and hops. This history has caused the culture to adopt a culture where drinking is popular and almost every district in the city has a brewery or pub to drink at. Popular beer companies known around the world are from Milwaukee such as Miller and Pabst. Today, the economy is also involved in technological advances such as aerospace engineering. Six Fortune 500 companies are also located in Wisconsin as well as many managerial and
service businesses. Since the city is located right next to Lake Michigan, many residents of the city love to come to the lake to participate in water activities such as kite surfing, windsurfing, and sailing. Festivals also are held around the lake such as well as cultural events which are held in parks located in downtown. Museums of all types are popular in the city especially art museums and science and
natural history museums. Many homes and areas are also part of the cultural history of Milwaukee. Beer wasn't the only thing that Germans brought to the city. Their lifestyle and customs were also adopted into the city such as singing, gymnastics and the idea of kindergarten meaning "garden for the children" which is a preschool program for young children to get them ready for school.
