The city of Las Vegas is also one of the worlds most popular cities for conventions and business meetings. Las Vegas is the 28th most populated city in the United States, with a population capping 603,000 in 2012. The city of Las Vegas also has more five star hotels than any other city in the world. The over-the-top lifestyle and adult entertainment have given it the name “sin city”. The city of Las Vegas is in the Mojave Desert. The fact that it is in a desert means that the climate is hot most of the year. The city is bright and sunny almost year-round.
In the peak summer months of the year, temperatures often remain stable at 90 degrees and above. Nightly temperatures usual stick around 80 degrees. The primary driving force of the Las Vegas economy is tourism and gaming. Many of the hotels and casinos in the downtown Las Vegas area are not as popular as ones on the main strip, despite having gone under major renovations in recent years. The start of the Las Vegas strip is accredited to the opening of the Mirage hotel in 1989. This development began a chain of larger developments and tourism that continue into the present day. The city of Las Vegas contains several museums that showcase the vibrant history of the area. Even though it prides itself on its tourism industry, there are lots of pockets of the city where people live regular lives. The city of Las Vegas has nearly 70 parks, as well as 120 playgrounds for residents to enjoy. One of the most notable outdoor attractions in the city are the golf courses, one of which being located right near the Las Vegas strip. RTC Transit gives transportation to much of the Las Vegas municipal area.
Many people bring their cars to Las Vegas, but several others still rely on public transportation. Greyhound operates inner city buses, and there are a ton of rideshare services in the area. The city has a massive downtown arts district, which is home to many art galleries, as well as annual events. A notable event that takes place yearly is the Las Vegas Film Festival. The College of Southern Nevada is the most well known higher education center in the Las Vegas valley. Other notable schools include the University of Nevada School of Medicine, as well as the Le Cordon Bleu culinary arts school. Major highways that run through the city include the I-15, which connects to Los Angeles. Most other streets in the Las Vegas Valley, except the strip (Las Vegas blvd.) and the interstates were formed with a grid system. Las Vegas has one of the highest divorce rates among any other United States city. Although this rate is not necessarily from residents themselves, since people travel to Las Vegas for divorce due to the easier process.
